Fuel cell technology has become a major topic in the automotive industry’s race to cut emissions and move toward zero-emission vehicles. A Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) uses hydrogen gas plus oxygen from the air to create electricity through a fuel cell stack, producing only water vapor as exhaust. Drivers enjoy fast refueling—similar to filling up a gasoline car (typically 3–5 minutes)—and can achieve driving ranges of around 300–400 miles on a full tank 11.

Although the total number of FCEVs on the road worldwide (just over 72,000 by 2022) 22 is still small compared to conventional or even battery electric vehicles (BEVs), the segment is expanding quickly. In fact, the global FCEV market was worth about USD 1.2 billion in 2022 and could go beyond USD 40 billion by 2030 11. South Korea leads the pack with over half of the world’s FCEV passenger cars, followed by the United States (over 15,000 FCEVs) and a growing market in China 22. Heavy-duty FCEVs (like buses and trucks) are particularly popular in China, where 95% of the world’s fuel cell trucks and 85% of fuel cell buses are on the road 22.

Around the world, governments in places like the U.S., European Union, China, Japan, and South Korea are significantly funding hydrogen-related programs to speed up infrastructure development and encourage widespread fuel cell vehicle deployment—especially in large vehicles such as trucks and buses that are more difficult to power with batteries. While still at an early stage, FCEVs are transitioning from small, pilot-oriented deployments to genuine commercial production.

Experts see them as complementary to BEVs in the push for climate-friendly transportation. Over the next decade, the main goals will be expanding hydrogen refueling stations, cutting vehicle costs, and proving that FCEVs can thrive in the mainstream. If all goes as planned, FCEVs could become a major force in helping the world reach net-zero emissions targets, especially where their ability to refuel quickly and travel long distances offers big advantages over battery charging.
