Xiaomi Inc. is a well-known technology company that has quickly entered the electric vehicle (EV) industry with a strong focus on Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) and future self-driving cars. Even though Xiaomi is new to car-making (the company formed its EV division in 2021), it has pledged a large sum—around USD 10 billion over ten years—to create a complete, in-house solution for autonomous driving [1].
With its first car, the Xiaomi SU7 sedan (launched in early 2024), the company introduced “Xiaomi Pilot,” an ADAS package with advanced features such as hands-free highway driving and city-navigation assist. These capabilities use multiple sensors, including cameras, radars, and—for top-tier trims—lidar. Over the past six months, Xiaomi has begun mass-producing the SU7, demonstrated its vision of a “Human × Car × Home” connected ecosystem, and made it clear that it wants to expand self-driving features to cover urban streets in many Chinese cities by the end of 2024 [2]–[4].
Overall, Xiaomi’s approach is to combine strong internal research and development, special hardware partnerships (for example, with lidar manufacturers), and its vast experience in consumer electronics. It aims to compete with both established car companies (like Toyota and Mercedes) and Chinese EV players (like Xpeng and NIO). Though Xiaomi is still new to building cars, it shows confidence that its tech expertise and ecosystem strategy will help it stand out in the fast-growing market for intelligent EVs.
