Speed to Market Is Automotive’s New Performance Metric

For decades, automakers have measured performance through quality, cost, production volume, and profitability. Today, speed to market is an equally important metric.

Traditional OEM vehicle programs still require approximately 36 to 48 months from development to start-of-production, while leading Chinese automakers can develop certain vehicles in nearly 18 to 24 months.

This difference goes beyond operational efficiency. Shorter development cycles allow automakers to respond faster to new technologies, customer expectations, and market changes. They can introduce a product, collect feedback, update features, reduce costs, and correct strategic decisions while competitors are still completing their original programs.

The market impact is already visible

China recorded 34.4 million vehicle sales in 2025, according to CAAM. Meanwhile, more than 13 million electric cars were sold in its domestic market, representing nearly 55% of new-car sales, according to the IEA. China’s total vehicle exports also reached a record ~7 million units.

China’s manufacturing scale, domestic demand, and mature EV supply chain have contributed to this growth. However, leading Chinese OEMs have another important advantage: they can convert ideas and technologies into commercially available vehicles faster.

This capability allows them to expand their portfolios, enter new segments, and adjust more quickly when customer demand changes.

Closing the gap

European and North American OEMs recognize the challenge. Many are redesigning their organizations, simplifying decision-making, improving collaboration between hardware and software teams, and reconsidering how suppliers are integrated into vehicle development.

The objective should not be speed at any cost. Quality, safety, and reliability cannot be compromised. The real opportunity is to remove unnecessary complexity through clearer product ownership, reusable platforms, earlier collaboration, and faster decisions.

Speed to market is not achieved by simply asking engineering teams to work faster. It must become an organizational capability.

The next generation of automotive leaders will combine manufacturing scale and engineering discipline with the ability to bring the right technology to market at the right time.
